Carbon Crediting
Many activities generate greenhouse gases that are harmful to the environment, but some activities or projects, although insufficient in number, absorb greenhouse gases, creating a balance in nature. Carbon credit mechanisms involve the economic support of projects and systems that do not emit carbon and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, providing social and natural benefits, by individuals or organizations that generate greenhouse gases. People and organizations can turn to carbon credit mechanisms to offset their emissions, which supports sustainability projects that would not normally occur. Thus, a system is born that encourages carbon-positive companies to purchase carbon credits from carbon-negative companies or activities (climate-positive). This system, where those who protect nature are rewarded, creates additional income sources for carbon-negative companies.
In this mechanism, calculated as carbon credits, each carbon credit is a tradable unit representing one ton of CO2 equivalent prevented in the atmosphere. These credits are generated by different types of sustainable projects that either absorb carbon or prevent its release in the first place.
There are various types of carbon credits depending on the project that generates them.
Renewable energy projects
Forest and conservation projects
Waste-to-energy projects
Carbon capture systems
Once generated and approved by international independent parties, these carbon credits can be sold to companies and individuals as a way to offset their own carbon emissions. However, due to the lack of standardization in this area, it is not always clear what to look for when choosing carbon credits or how to measure the impact of the projects that generate them. It is crucial to choose a project certified by an internationally recognized standard: Transparency about a project's quality assurance and calculation methodology make the real difference. Reputable standards follow best practices to ensure these expectations are met.
